King Charles had an unexpected encounter with actor Idris Elba during his visit to Antigua on Monday, November 2, and their brief exchange included a little humour.
The King, 77, had just taken part in installing an engraved stone at Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, when he crossed paths with Elba, who was attending the historic naval base for the One Commonwealth Night concert.
The actor, 54, was there as a goodwill ambassador for The King’s Trust, a charity he has supported for many years.
After shaking hands, Charles asked him, “What are you doing here?”
“I get around,” Elba replied with a smile, before asking the King how he was enjoying his visit. He then added, “Sorry about the prime minister.”
Elba has a particularly personal connection to The King’s Trust. As a teenager, he received a grant from the organization that enabled him to attend the National Youth Music Theatre, helping set him on the path to his acting career. He has since become one of its most enthusiastic supporters.
In May, King Charles recognised his contribution by knighting him for his services to young people.
The encounter comes as Antigua hosts Commonwealth leaders and representatives from its 56 member states, who are gathering to discuss issues including climate resilience, trade and international cooperation.
The summit is also taking place against a backdrop of growing calls from Caribbean leaders for slavery reparations to be addressed, with some pushing for the issue to feature on the agenda.
